I agree with Nabokov. As far as identifying with a character…not so sure—there are many that are hard to identify with—Emma Bovary, Ignatius J. Riley (of A Confederacy of Dunces)…oh the list could get long…but maybe it depends on what one means by “identify with.”

I was thinking I really need to get inside a character to enjoy the story but that is too limiting, excludes too many, as you say
