My father had a great Caldey Island story. One Christmas Eve a rather inebriated chap decided to row over to Caldey to wish the monks Merry Christmas, and proceeded to sing Christmas carols very raucously outside the monastery. I innocently asked my father couldn’t the monks evict him? Turned out they didn’t want to manhandle him, and because they’d taken a vow of silence in the lead-up to Christmas they couldn’t phone the police to push him off the island either. I think they ended up opening a door to let him in, so he didn’t freeze, and he slept it off on the island 🙂
