Kiefer may be my favourite artist and I have no idea why, as I’m not usually into such weirdness. I love this huge exhibition, on at the White Cube till 12 Feb. It’s title refers to Norse mythology’s paradise for those slain in battle but also, this being Keifer and heavily into things Germanic, also to the Neo Classical monument built by Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1842 to honour heroic Germans. It’s a huge exhibition and most of the pieces are suitably heroic in size. The rooms open from a wide, dimly lit corridor filled with unmade beds that look like they’ve survived a war.
Philemon in stasis:
Sursum corda. Maybe my favourite. I showed it to a friend who wants a wardrobe like this. Not sure if she wants clothes with 6 arms in it.
And the big sunny room at the end full of monumental strangeness
And at the end of the long corridor a surprisingly not weird, but very haunting image of a man – ?Kiefer – walking away. I’m becoming rather obsessed with this image. So sad, somehow like the end of a war. He’s going home at last.
