Antibiotic-fed Cows Emit More Methane

This is from the i paper a few days ago, and should surprise nobody who has ever taken antibiotics:

Feeding antibiotics to farm animals is having an unintended consequence – fuelling global warming by almost doubling the amount of methane cattle produce.

antibiotics are being so widely used in agriculture that cow dung is now 1.8 times as gassy as it would be without them, according to new research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Science.

This estimates the world’s cattle are producing the equivalent of 2.2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, another greenhouse gas…

Tobin Hammer is the lead author of the study by the University of Colorado.

He said that the study did not look at belching but suspected further analysis would find a broadly similar increase.

Generating ‘wind’ means they are not properly digesting their food, so their diets are probably unbalanced, so are less healthy. In addition, of course, is the growing concern over antibiotic resistance which means the routine use of such drugs is contributing to resistance, and becoming ineffective in the future.
