The Dawn of Answerphones

This is a gem from Paul Jenning’s book, The Living Village, again from Grampound, Cornwall.

“Both doctors also have Ansaphones. It will also take a message from the caller, should he wish to leave one. The first time this machine was in use the message recorded was ‘O my gor, whatever next!’ and on another occasion the voice said, ‘but doctor, how can you be out, I can hear you speaking to me right now!’
