Female Fighters

A while ago I knew someone trying to research the very poorly recorded world of female boxers. I would not lie to meet either of these in a dark alley. This is more from News from the English Countryside:

A pitched battle was lately fought at Elmstead, in the neighbourhood of Chelmsford, by 2 women; being stripped, without caps, and hair tied close, to it they set, and for 45 minutes maintained a most desperate conflict. One of them, an adept in the sciece, beat her antagonist in a most shocking manner, and would certainly have killed her but for the interference of the spectators. To the vanquished heroine her husband was bottle-holder, and with a degree of barbarity that would have disgraced a savage, we are informed he instigated his fair rib to the fight. – Cambridge Chronicle 1793:
