Dangers of Bible Reading

In April 1539 Henry VIII issued a proclamation, never issued, blaming the rising tide if murmur, malice and malignity on unsupervised Bible reading. He had hoped the English Bible would be read with meekness. But people were disputing in churches, alehouses, taverns, calling each other papists or heretics. He decided only qualified clerics were to read aloud scripture, with no more ‘open’ reading, especially during divine services, to use the time reading or praying in silence.
