Lollapalooza

This strange word has done a lot of travelling in the past century. This is from Bob Stanley’s Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

It was chosen as the title for Janes’s Addiction’s farewell tour in 1991, which was more like a festival, with a wide selection of guest performers such as Siouxie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T and Shaolin Monks.

Perry Farrel, singer, coined the term ‘Alternative Nation’ to describe the tour, and has been running the Lollapalooza festival since.

Lollapalooza is an antiquated term – no sign of it in my big Chamber’s dictionary, or the OED, so it really is obscure. It was popular with PG Wodehouse, so should be in the dictionary, but Farrel found it in a 3 Stooges Film.

So now you know.
