Deadwood Discussed

I missed Deadwood when it came out, but was utterly blown away by it when I got it out a while back on DVD. Such extraordinary writing, acting, design – the works. I kept thinking of it as Shakespearean, but in this essay it is described as Roman, which nails it also, they were all times when chaos ruled, violence was rampant. The great strength of Deadwood is in the ability to get us to like monsters like the larger than life Schwerigan, and giving all the good guys flaws that we can relate to. Everything is big, noisy, unpredictable and messy. There is so much in it that should make our PC alarms going off so loudly, and yet… you get drawn in, you drown in the mess that it represents. the mess that made America. Utterly brilliant.
