Top Must Reads

I’ve never been fond of ‘best of’ lists as art is always partly subjective and even for the same person, can change drastically over time, but this list from the late 19th century is interesting due to the type of books included – some I’ve never heard of, some don’t deserve such praise, and there can be endless arguments over the choices, but 10 of the top 25 are by women, with 29 of the total, which is rather impressive, given how liberated we are now. It’s also impressive to see so many by foreign authors, showing how many people could speak foreign languages, not just Latin and Greek, but also several of the modern European languages, a feat that few today can achieve.
