Caerleon

This is an amazing little town near Newport, a former Roman town. It houses a good museum with finds, the remains of a Roman leisure centre, an amphitheatre and barracks, all of which are free.

The amphitheatre seated some 5,000 people, which is incredible as it is not that big, even with bleachers on top of this. I sat in the middle in the hot sun, trying to imagine what it used to be like.

This is the barracks, next to a school, so awash with the sounds of kids screaming. No fences, no supervision, no vandalism, because this is theirs. How many of these kids had ancestors who slept here?
