Scotland’s Forth Road Bridge, which crosses the Firth of Forth, near Edinburgh, is hopefully going onto the World Heritage listings but any mention of it is a potential minefield for newsreaders, as a letter in yesterday’s paper, by Thom Cross of Carluke, explained:
“The auld railway bridge (iconic) is the first Forth bridge but the new “wee country bridge” the Clackmannan Road Bridge is the fourth Forth bridge. (the Kircardine Bridge is the second and the Forth Road Bridge is the third).
To add to the confusion, the Scottish Government is planning a new Forth Road bridge (the fifth Forth Bridge) except if the third Forth bridge is totally replaced, then the new Forth bridge will be the fourth bridge and not the fifth but the third Forth road bridge.”
I think I need to lie down now.
Dad forthrightly thought he could count until he read that!
